Unit 5 · Kinetics

Chapter 5.1

Reaction Rates and the Rate Law

Double the amount of one reactant and a reaction may go twice as fast, four times as fast, or not change at all. The exponent is a fact about the reaction, and only an experiment can reveal it.

By the end

  1. 01Define reaction rate and relate the rates of different species through the balanced equation
  2. 02Explain how concentration, temperature, surface area, and a catalyst change rate
  3. 03Find the order in each reactant from initial-rate data
  4. 04Write the rate law with a rate constant whose units match the overall order
