Unit 8 · Acids and Bases

Chapter 8.2

Weak Acid and Weak Base Equilibria

Vinegar is mostly intact acetic acid molecules with only one in a hundred giving up its proton. The pH of a weak acid is an equilibrium problem, and K_a is its equilibrium constant.

By the end

  1. 01Find the pH, pOH, and every species' concentration in a monoprotic weak acid or base solution
  2. 02Compute percent ionization from pK_a or pK_b and the initial concentration
  3. 03Relate K_a and K_b of a conjugate pair through K_w
