Unit 10 · Electric Force, Field, and Potential

Chapter 10.1

Charge, Charging, and Coulomb's Law

Rub a balloon on your hair and it clings to a wall that carries no net charge at all. Charge is never created, only moved, and the force between charges is like gravity but enormously stronger.

By the end

  1. 01Describe charge as quantized, conserved, and carried by particles that a point-charge model represents
  2. 02Compute the electric force between point charges in magnitude and direction, up to four charges
  3. 03Explain charging by friction, contact, induction, polarization, and grounding with charge conservation
  4. 04Compare electric and gravitational forces and explain why gravity wins at astronomical scales
