Unit 14 · Waves, Sound, and Physical Optics

Chapter 14.2

Boundaries, Polarization, and Light as a Wave

A pulse hitting a fixed end comes back upside down; hitting a free end it comes back upright. Light passing two crossed polarizing filters does not come through at all — and that tells you what light is.

By the end

  1. 01Predict the reflected and transmitted waves when a pulse meets a boundary between two media
  2. 02Explain polarization of transverse waves and the intensity a polarizer lets through
  3. 03Describe electromagnetic waves as oscillating electric and magnetic fields that need no medium
  4. 04Order the electromagnetic spectrum and the visible colors by wavelength
